Official drought status not necessary for affected farmers to access support

All farmers affected by drought conditions can access support and assistance, regardless of whether their region has been officially declared a drought zone, National Drought Committee Chair Phil Journeaux said today.

“There’s been some confusion about who is eligible for assistance – we want to emphasise that all farmers are eligible for support, regardless of whether their region has been declared a drought zone”, says Mr Journeaux.

“Regional authorities in Taranaki, the Waikato, Wanganui-Manawatu, and the Wairarapa have taken the decision to officially declare their region a drought zone – but this is not necessary to trigger Government assistance.”

“The Government recognises that many areas throughout the country are in drought, and all assistance measures are available regardless of whether a local drought has been declared.”

The National Drought Committee is coordinating the activity of all the industry community and Government organisations involved in drought preparedness, response and recovery.

The Ministry for Social Development, through Work and Income, is providing a range of financial assistance to both farming and non-farming families whose incomes have been affected by drought. Farmers can call 0800 779 997 to find out how MSD can assist them

Tax relief and income assistance is available for farmers affected by the drought. Inland Revenue has a range of measures to help. Any farmers concerned about tax payments, changes in income, refunds or filing dates can contact their tax agent or Inland Revenue’s emergency helpline 0800 473 566.
