March 17, 2008
Stories being published today in Carbon News at www.carbonnews.co.nz, the new specialist daily carbon market news service include:
EXCLUSIVE: Government to plead for forest off-setting option:
The Government will plead with its Kyoto Protocol partners to introduce forest offsetting to the rules covering the second commitment period from 2012 to 2025, but its chances of success are remote, a well-placed source has told Carbon News.
Business wants New Zealand to go nuclear on emission credits:
Businesses being required to enter New Zealand’s emissions trading scheme want to be able to trade nuclear-sourced emissions credits.
MPs on track to get emissions bill back to House June 10:
Parliamentary Finance and Expenditure select committee hearings on the Climate Change (Emissions Trading and Renewable Preference) Bill get underway on April 2.
Renewables credits find ready markets:
Electricity generator Trustpower is finding ready markets for the carbon credits earned by its Tararua wind farms but the proceeds will do nothing to insulate consumers from rising power prices. Trustpower still has 600,000 credits stashed away from the credits the Government began issuing in 2004 for wind farms, landfill gas and hydro enhancement projects. Selling the credits will do nothing to cushion consumers from future power price rises because they were granted only for renewable energy projects that would otherwise have been commercially non-viable.
Carbon News (www.carbonnews.co.nz) is Australasia’s first daily specialist information service for the new carbon markets.
