Prime Punakaiki property offers huge potential

Prime Punakaiki property offers huge potential

4 February 2008: A prime commercial property located opposite the internationally-renowned Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki on the South Island’s West Coast offers entrepreneurs huge potential.

Currently home to Punakaiki Crafts, which incorporates Nikau Café, the 1000+sqm site is located in a superb spot directly opposite the hugely popular tourist attraction and right alongside the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre on State Highway 6.

Presently owned and operated by a co-operative of artists, this unique property, which is being marketed by Michael Mokhtar of Harcourts Richmond in Nelson, features a 230sqm building with huge potential for a wide variety of businesses.

“The Pancake Rocks are a tourist magnet and there’s also a wide range of outdoor activities such as tramping, canoeing, caving and horse-riding to attract people for longer stays, so this property offers investors and owner-operators alike a marvellous opportunity in an unbeatable spot,” he says.

“The spacious architecturally-designed building, the most significant and best-located commercial building in the area, is completely fitted out for the present gallery, shop and café, plus there’s plenty of parking and the potential to utilise even more of the large section.

“With the land, building and business all up for sale for the first time in more than 20 years, a very special opportunity indeed is on offer here,” Mr Mokhtar says.

“Future owners may want to continue as is, or they may choose to establish another sort of venture such as a restaurant. Another possibility is to completely redevelop and build apartments for example or to set up a combination of any of the above.”

The current owners, a group of artists who set up Punakaiki Crafts in 1985 as an outlet for their work, have reluctantly decided to put the property up for sale, Mr Mokhtar says, adding that should the property continue to be used as a retail outlet they may be willing to continue selling their work there.

Located at 4296 State Highway 6 in Punakaiki, the land, building and existing business are being offered for sale by tender. Tenders close at 5pm on Thursday 28 February (or by prior agreement).
