New Zealand is still not Exporting Enough
New Zealanders should not become complacent at the news of record high exports in the December 2007 month, according to the Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“The unexpected trade surplus recorded in the month of December is welcome news but it is only one month’s data,” said Chamber CEO, Charles Finny.
“While the surge in dairy exports is very positive for our trade balance, that sector can not be expected to turn around New Zealand’s massive balance of payments deficit alone.
“New Zealand is not exporting enough. The country must continue to grow its export base if it is to prosper, and the government must provide the right economic environment to allow businesses to export.
“We hope that any increase in the already overvalued New Zealand dollar, as a result of these figures is short-lived,” Mr Finny concluded.
