Marlborough Winery Spy Valley Expansion With Significant Marlborough Vineyard Purchase

Leading Marlborough wine label Spy Valley has announced a major expansion with the acquisition of a new premium quality vineyard.

The new vineyard is 20 acres of established hillside in the Omaka Valley.

``The ultra premium fruit will complement and extend the hugely successful estate production we have in lower Waihopai Valley,’’ Spy Valley general manager Blair Gibbs said today.

``Largely pinot noir with some chardonnay and pinot gris, it will allow the in-demand pinot capability to increase immediately.

``Our vineyard has been performing to the highest level for some time so we are stepping into very high quality vineyard. This acquisition lifts Spy Valley’s total vineyard area to just shy of 400 acres.’’

Spy Valley’s latest label, Envoy, released earlier this year, represents small parcels of exceptional fruit off designated vineyard sites.

The label has proved successful with all the wines selling out after only several months.

The second Envoy release will be in February next year. The wines have already been well acclaimed by national and international wine commentators.

Earlier this year, Spy Valley became the first wine company anywhere in the world in the 26-year history of the Sydney international wine contest to win four trophies.

``This was fantastic news not just for Spy Valley but for the Marlborough brand and for New Zealand wine,’’ Gibbs said.

``This year we have the pinot gris and riesling with blue gold and top 100 and the gewurztraminer with blue gold trophies announced at the Sydney Banquet in March 2008. Fingers crossed.’’

They produce more than 100,000 cases of wine a year and they are one of New Zealand’s leading family-owned wine companies.
