Tomorrow’s Technology - In New Zealand Today
NEC New Zealand, a wholly owned subsidiary of NEC Corporation (Japan), is celebrating 25 years of innovation in this
country with a one-off Technology Showcase at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington on 22 November 2007.
“This is a unique opportunity for our clients and invited guests to see the latest technological advances from a company
whose technologies form the backbone of New Zealand’s communications infrastructure – they touch everyone’s lives,
everyday, in some way,” says Paul Nuttridge, Business Development Manager for NEC (NZ).
“This year marks the 25th Anniversary of our incorporation in New Zealand, although NEC technologies have been here
since 1962. In that time, our small team in Wellington has quietly and effi ciently been delivering technologies, in
some cases to 99.999% reliability in mission critical situations, which have empowered New Zealanders’ everyday lives.
This anniversary seemed an appropriate time to celebrate these achievements and to also give people a glimpse into their
future and broaden their technology horizons with our latest innovations.”
Guest speakers from Japan, Australia and New Zealand will provide an insight into the latest global technological
developments with a series of short presentations in the morning on NGN (the next generation network and it’s impact on
the telecommunications industry in NZ), VPCC (NEC’s thin client solution), and the increasing use of biometric
technology including digital fi ngerprinting, facial recognition and intelligent video. The presentations will be
followed by lunch and refreshments and the opportunity to browse the Technology Showcase.
On display at the Showcase will be the very latest in integrated biometrics, network and communication, and visual
display technology. Visitors will be able to experience facial recognition in action with the newest application of
NeoFace, the technology behind the recent Weetbix/All Blacks Face2Face campaign. Other technologies on show include
AFIS, the world’s No 1 fi ngerprint system and industry experts will be on hand to discuss mobile WiMax, a product at
the leading edge of the global trend towards fi xed/mobile convergence.
The Technology Showcase will also introduce for the fi rst time in New Zealand, NEC’s Virtual PC Type thin client system
solution, called the Virtual PC Centre. This system promises to improve client environments by sharing PC operating
systems and applications that are used by multiple end users on consolidated servers in a virtualised environment. From
a localised thin client terminal device, end users can access their data on a secure data center server through a
virtualised PC with a display, keyboard and mouse.
And what’s a Technology Showcase without a robot? Direct from NEC’s laboratories in Japan, NEC’s very own robot, PaPeRo,
will be there to demonstrate just what you can expect from the personal assistant of the future!
