New Zealand Is A Land Of One-Man (Or Woman) Bands
The majority of small and medium New Zealand enterprises (SMEs) have no paid employees, according to Business Mentors
New Zealand.
Research provided to Business Mentors by Statistics New Zealand reveals that out of the country’s 361,708 SMEs, 62%
operate with the owner/operator as the sole employee.
According to Ray Schofield, CEO of Business Mentors NZ: ‘Many of the business owners we mentor manage very successful
companies, for an extended amount of time, with themselves as the only employee’, says Ray. ‘Often, particularly during
the early stages of a company’s growth, there is no real need for the business owner to recruit additional staff.
‘Some small professional service businesses, for example, will start off by using independent contractors, when
necessary, rather than spending money on staff recruitment. If customer demand for a service grows, other employees or
service providers can be added.’
Ray believes that with the right amount of help and guidance, these owner/operator driven companies can become extremely
prosperous.
‘Many owners of businesses this size find it difficult to take a step back and plan for their future, as they are so
involved with the day-to-day running of the company’, explains Ray. ‘This makes growing the business a challenge’.
It is important that these business owners are nurtured and given adequate support. After all, the small, young
companies of today can be the large, successful companies of tomorrow’.
