News Release
Symantec Managed Threat Analysis Offers Customised Assessment of Targeted Malware Attacks
Symantec Security Response backs service with its threat intelligence
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the worldwide availability of Managed Threat Analysis (MTA), a new service designed to provide custom protection and analysis of malware and other security risks to help enterprises defend against data theft. Symantec Global Services’ Security Response expert analysts will review sample malware or other suspicious code submitted by an organisation and deliver a custom, in-depth incident analysis report developed for the organisation’s specific needs and risk profile within 96 hours of incident initiation.
The Managed Threat Analysis report will help businesses understand the implications and impact of the specific malware on their systems, outline a remediation strategy and tools to safely remove the threat, and document recommendations to mitigate future attacks and improve their overall security posture. This information will help enterprises, such as financial institutions or government agencies, comply with regulatory requirements that mandate notification within a certain timeframe if any data has been compromised. Incident submissions are accepted on a 24x7 basis.
“The current security threat landscape is marked by sophisticated, targeted attacks that attempt to steal intellectual property and digital assets, which could tarnish an organisation’s brand,” said Mike Mulville, senior director of product management, Symantec Managed Security Services. “Managed Threat Analysis provides a proactive outsourced solution that supplements organisations’ threat intelligence to ultimately ensure greater confidence in protecting against today’s threats and future security risks.”
Managed Threat Analysis leverages the Symantec Security Response expertise to offer fast and accurate analysis and removal of malicious code to help customers reduce their time and costs associated with a specific security incident. Symantec Security Response experts gather threat intelligence from the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, a worldwide collection of millions of vendor-neutral security data sources that provides the foundation for Symantec’s expert research and analysis, enabling delivery of proactive notification of security threats.
According to the recent Symantec Internet Security Threat Report, cyber criminals are targeting trusted brands and web sites to gain confidential information, such as usernames and passwords that they can use for identity theft or fraud, or to access sites from which to deploy further attacks. Cyber criminals are also becoming more professional and leveraging sophisticated toolkits to carry out these attacks. One example is with the use of phishing toolkits, a series of scripts that allow an attacker to automatically set up phishing web sites that spoof legitimate web sites. The top three most widely used phishing toolkits were responsible for 42 percent of all phishing attacks detected during the reporting period of January 1 through June 30, 2007.
