Political Editor Appointed To Sunday Star-Times

Veteran political journalist Ruth Laugesen has been appointed political editor of The Sunday Star-Times.

Laugesen is no stranger to political reporting, having covered six consecutive elections since first entering the Press Gallery in 1990 for Wellington’s then evening newspaper The Evening Post.

Sunday Star-Times editor Cate Brett said New Zealand was at a fascinating political juncture and next year’s election campaign promised to be a tough contest for the hearts and minds of middle New Zealand:

During the 11 years Laugesen worked in the Gallery she covered National's 1990 reforms, the introduction of MMP, the rise of small parties and coalition government and Labour's return to office.

She has been political editor for The Dominion and later the Sunday Star-Times before moving into her current role as a senior feature writer in the Star-Times’ Wellington bureau.

Laugesen was awarded the David Lowe fellowship to Oxford in 1993 and a European Union Fellowship in 2005.

Laugesen will take over the role from current political editor Irene Chapple in mid September when Chapple leaves for Europe.
