Interval fills summer feed gap
Sheep and beef farmers looking to bridge the feed gap during dry summers on the east coast of both islands are the most
likely to benefit from a forage rape cultivar now available for spring sowing.
Interval rape, from Agriseeds, features not only high yield and strong re-growth but also good drought tolerance.
Sown in spring, Interval will generate plenty of leafy summer and autumn finishing feed, making it ideal for young
stock.
Typical yields are 8 12 t DM/ha, with metabolisable energy (ME) levels of 10 -12 megajoules (MJ)/kg DM.
Good palatability combined with multiple grazings from its excellent re-growth potential offer improved productivity for
summer-dry properties, Agriseeds says.
Interval can also be sown in late summer for winter grazing. It has strong resistance to powdery mildew, and is frost
tolerant, which improves its keeping ability.
Interval should be sown at 4 - 5 kg/ha.
