Crew Takes Out Mcdonald’s Design Competition

Crew takes out McDonald’s design competition.

Hands on experience saw a member of the McDonald's crew take out the There’s Nothing Uniform About $10,000 uniform design competition, ahead of nearly 60 other entries.

Megan Reynolds, who helps train McDonald's crew at the Onehunga Dressmart restaurant, was chosen as the first place winner and secured a cool $10,000 prize in the process.

Her winning crew shirt was black and grey with a sleek tailored look and subtle McDonald’s branding. The judging panel - including renowned fashion designer Tanya Carlson and the designer behind Cherry Cotton Candy, Cara Cotton - all agreed Ms Reynolds’ shirt was the obvious winner.

“The winning shirt had all the elements needed for this sort of commercial design – suitability, comfort and a youthful look that reflects the spirit of McDonald’s,” says Ms Carlson.

A significant feature of the winning shirt was the word CREW inscribed across the back. Cara Cotton commented this gave the shirt a ‘cool’ appeal while bringing the staff together to feel like part of a team.

McDonald's Director of Human Resources, Evelyn Gates, says the winner produced a shirt that stood up to being critiqued.

“While there were many high quality designs that showed obvious enthusiasm for the competition, the winner’s design was exactly suitable for the purpose," says Ms Gates.

"The winner’s knowledge of what McDonald’s crew would want and like was a big help - I know our crew will be happy and feel proud to wear the shirt.”

Megan Reynolds says she is still in shock over the win. “I actually didn’t believe it when they called and told me I had won, $10,000 is a lot of money! I designed this shirt with all the crew in mind so I just hope they all feel as happy about it as I do.”

Second place went to fashion student, Alice Walter, from Bulls, and third place to fashion student, Zoe Knighton, from Plimmerton. They were rewarded a generous $5,000 and $2,000 for their efforts.

The competition, which is also running in Australia, is being timed with the recent refurbishments of all McDonald’s restaurants. As each restaurant adopts the new look they can take on the new crew shirt as well.
