Five companies recognised in Hirepool Construction Awards

Five companies have scooped national awards in the 2007 Hirepool Construction Awards, presented in Rotorua on Saturday night.

Fletcher Construction Company won the category four, for projects valued at over $10 million, for its work building the Northport Berth 3 at Whangarei.

McConnell Dowell won category three (for projects valued at $3 million to $10 million) for its work on the Clandeboye ocean outfall pipe near Timaru. The company also won a Merit Award in category four for the construction of port facilities for the Goro nickel mine project in New Caledonia.

Category two, for projects with a value between $500,000 and $3 million, was won by Juno Civil Limited for the Opahu Floodway Protection project in Lower Hutt.

Nelson-based Thelin Construction won category one (projects with a value less than $500,000) for its work designing and building a multi-span pedestrian bridge at Kaikoura. And Bond Contractors Limited of Invercargill received a Merit Award for the design and build of a public boardwalk at the former Invercargill City Council refuse site lagoon.

The Hirepool awards are open to all members of the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation (NZCF), and cover major civil engineering, construction and general contracting projects completed during the past year. The awards were presented at the NZCF annual conference.

NZCF Executive Officer Malcolm Abernethy said that the winners’ skill and innovation, pushing the boundaries of construction technology on very challenging projects, were all factors in the judges’ decision.

“The skills and commitment of the award winners represented the very best of the civil contracting industry in New Zealand,” he said.

“The Hirepool awards recognise the huge range of skills, talent and innovative thinking in the New Zealand construction industry and highlights NZCF members who are delivering the most outstanding work.”

Tenby Powell, Chief Executive of Rakino Group, owners of Hirepool, the principal sponsor of the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation, said: “These awards reflect the outstanding service industry members contribute to this country’s continued growth.

“They really are the unsung heroes. Too often the work these industries play in developing and maintaining New Zealand’s economy across a range of infrastructural services, so critical to enabling a modern economy like ours compete efficiently in world markets, is overlooked.”
