BNZ Weekly Overview, 2 August 2007

Wholesale interest rates are barely changed from a week ago but the Kiwi dollar has fallen strongly mainly in response to foreign investors getting scared about the world markets and taking some of their money home - principally back into Japanese yen. Where we go from here depends very much on what happens in the United States sub-prime mortgage market and whether troubles there spread further.
