Trans-Tasman Brewers Unite Behind AAB

Some of the largest brewers in Australia have been joined by a New Zealand brewer under a single umbrella to form a brewers association for Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian Associated Brewers (AAB) will now be known as the Australasian Associated Brewers following the addition of leading New Zealand brewing business, DB Breweries, to the organisation’s membership.

DB Breweries joins existing members Foster’s Australia, Asia, Pacific, Coopers Brewery Ltd and J Boag and Son Pty Ltd.

“DB’s membership opens a new and exciting chapter for the AAB, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year,” says AAB Chairman, Jamie Odell.

“The move to a trans-Tasman industry association reflects the growing dialogue between stakeholders in both countries. The Food Standards Authority, for example, operates under a trans-Tasman treaty so it makes sense for the industry to formalise its co-operation.”

Managing Director of DB Breweries, Brian Blake has also welcomed the move.

“DB has always seen value in an independent, industry voice to progress the common issues facing the liquor industry,” says Mr Blake. “Our decision to join the AAB is a sensible reflection of the closeness of the New Zealand and Australian markets.”

“We look forward to being able to contribute to the development of ideas and solutions around the social and regulatory issues faced by the industry. We believe that drawing on the collective thinking of a trans-Tasman industry association will be of great benefit.”

The first meeting of the widened AAB will be held early next month to mark the 40th anniversary of the Association.

The AAB’s permanent representation in Canberra will now be complemented by representation in Wellington.
