MIAG Response To PPCS Announcment

MIAG Response To PPCS Announcment

The announcement by PPCS that it will team up with its rivals to market lamb into the US and Canada has been applauded by the Meat Industry Action Group.

MIAG Spokesman Keith Milne said yesterday that his group had been eagerly awaiting the announcement that New Zealand Lamb Companies have regrouped to market lamb and mutton.

The consortium consists of Alliance Group, PPCS and ANZCO (Canterbury Meat Packers).

Mr Milne said New Zealand Lamb Companies had operated in the US market successfully in the past, so it is pleasing to see those involved, particularly our two co-ops, working together again in this area. "We agree with PPCS Chairman Reese Hart that this is a first step along the path to better returns and we applaud this initiative.

"We were encouraged when Mr Hart said the move will strengthen NZ lamb exports into North America and may well form the basis of a marketing model for other markets.

"Our expectation is now for further co-operation in the marketplace, as we see this as being essential."

Mr Milne also pointed out that more co-ordination of supply into the European market must be urgently pursued before the start of next season. MIAG is committed to ensuring the momentum for change in our industry continues with urgency.
