Small IT company becomes finalist in big IT awards

Palmerston North based Internet Technology and Web Design company Spinning Planet New Zealand was announced as a finalist in the prestigious National Computerworld Excellence Awards last week.

The Spinning Planet entry describes how they've used Open Source (free) technology to integrate telephony, internet and remote support into one system to help them manage their national and international client-base more effectively.

The main features of their system include:

- SP VOIP: An internet based phone system that allows Spinning Planet to connect their phone system to real telephone numbers all over the world so international clients can call Spinning Planet for free. It also allows clients to teleconference between their international offices for free.

- SP Help Desk: Clients can allow support staff to remote control their computers to show them how to configure software or fix problems.

- SP Cell: Spinning Planet can direct their cellphone calls through their own phone system allowing free calls to clients and very low toll rates.

- SP Timecard: Spinning Planet have built their own timecard system that displays client information from their internet based billing system. The timecard system also links into the phone system so staff can transfer calls or call clients directly from a web page.

When asked why Spinning Planet had implemented so many new technologies in their business CEO Brynn Neilson said; "When a company works globally its needs are different; your clients need to be able contact you easily and you can't just show up to their offices to help them. From our perspective our new tools not only save us thousands of dollars and improve our customer support but they also provide the basis and testing environment for our new products and services."
