Government Commitment To Business Sustainability Welcomed
The Sustainable Business Network has welcomed the Government’s commitment to business sustainability, announced in the
budget.
“The importance of sustainability to New Zealand business is now crystal clear,” says Rachel Brown, CEO of the
Sustainable Business Network.
“Many businesses are already changing their practices to become more sustainable through programmes such as our Get
Sustainable Challenge. Their efforts need to be supported and encouraged. It is a positive sign that the government is
committed to helping that.”
Rachel Brown says a partnership approach to building sustainability will be welcomed by business and the community.
“Effective solutions and innovation will come about through working together. There are hundreds of businesses,
organisations and individuals carrying out this work already.”
“Our members look forward to working with the Government on the business partnerships for sustainability programme and
on providing consumers with information.”
Rachel Brown says that sustainability should be seen as an opportunity for New Zealand.
“While there has been an emphasis on the risks of issues such as food miles, climate change and carbon emissions, there
are in fact as many opportunities for New Zealand, both at home and internationally,” says Rachel Brown.
“Sustainability can be and is a driver for innovation and the development of new markets. We welcome the requirement for
government departments to start implementing sustainable procurement policies. This will provide further impetus to the
growing trend for sustainable products and services.”
The Sustainable Business Network represents more than 480 businesses, from SMEs, consultants, research and academic
staff, through to large businesses and corporations. The Network promotes sustainable business practice through
networking, practical advice and support, research and policy. We focus on leading, promoting and facilitating practices
and procedures that enhance economic prosperity, environmental quality, social equity and business ethics.
