Support for export competitiveness welcomed

Business NZ has welcomed United Future’s support for competition in the area of export meat inspection.

Last week Business NZ expressed concern at the anticompetitive features of the State-Owned Enterprises (AgriQuality Limited and Asure New Zealand Limited) Bill, which seeks to remove competition between those SOEs.

Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly said competition - and particularly competition from the private sector - was one of the best ways to help reduce costs in the meat industry and to make New Zealand meat products more competitive on the world market.

“At this very difficult time for New Zealand exporters, it is encouraging to see United Future’s support for the competitiveness on which our export industry depends.

“United Future’s action this week in negotiating for amendments to the Bill to support the case for involvement by the private sector is appreciated.”
