New Zealand Post Apologises

4 MAY 2007

MEDIA STATEMENT

New Zealand Post Apologises

New Zealand Post said the employment of a part time staff member has been terminated as a result of its investigation into a breach of privacy where a woman received text messages after providing personal details when posting a parcel. The company has also apologised to the woman involved.

“We are very sorry for what happened. As soon as I was aware of the issue, I took action to investigate it,” Group Manager Retail, Ms Michelle van Gaalen said.

“We are also working to review what other measures may be necessary to help prevent this kind of thing happening again and will be seeking the input of the Privacy Commissioner.

“We have policies and training in place to protect privacy and have reminded all of our PostShop employees of their obligations. We are also reissuing our policies today to reinforce their responsibilities in this area.

“We are continuing to investigate how this happened and the manner in which it was handled.

“This is a very unfortunate incident and extremely serious and we will do what we need to do to tighten procedures and improve response to complaints.

“New Zealand Post takes its responsibility to its customers very seriously and this is a disappointing incident which is receiving our priority attention.”
