John Jones Appointed CEO Of Hamilton Pilot Training Company

John Jones, former Director of the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority, has been appointed as CEO of the pilot training company, CTC Aviation Training, based at Hamilton International Airport.

After five years as the Director of the CAA in Wellington, Mr Jones retired in November last year. Since then he has been continuing to assist the Authority with a handover to his replacement and assistance with a number of projects. He joins CTC on 1 May 2007 and will be appointed to the Board of Directors.

CTC’s Group Chairman, Captain Chris Clarke, expressed his delight at Mr Jones’acceptance of the role saying: “John comes to CTC with a wealth of experience and a very great deal of respect in the aviation industry. His previous roles in all aspects of aviation, from the operational to the regulatory, mean that he is uniquely qualified to lead our team as we continue to develop our training activities in Hamilton. We are very proud to have such a well-respected figure joining us.” John Jones commenting on his appointment says, “I have watched CTC’s progression in New Zealand over the last few years with great interest. After visiting all the company’s UK and NZ operations and meeting the people both here and overseas recently, I am really impressed with their high professionalism and no compromise to safety approach. I am very much looking forward to leading the great CTC team in Hamilton.”

CTC will be training 180 pilots this year at its state-of-the-art Crew Training Centre at Hamilton International Airport and has recently started training New Zealand pilots through an arrangement with the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. It has a fleet of 30 aircraft at Hamilton International Airport and has recently expanded its facilities to include additional flight simulators, more ramp space for aircraft parking and a purpose-built trainee accommodation complex close to its training centre. CTC opened its Crew Training Centre - Hamilton in April 2005 and now trains 180 pilots annually. The Company projects through local employment and use of New Zealand services, it will inject approximately $90 million into the local economy over the next 10 years.

A fleet of 30 aircraft are currently utilised at the Crew Training Centre – Hamilton, with more aircraft on order. The fleet includes Diamond DA42 TwinStars and Piper PA44 Seminoles as well as the single engine fleet of Robins, Alphas and Cessnas. On order are 24 New Zealand built Alpha 160 trainers to replace the single-engine fleet. Close to the airport is CTC’s purpose built trainee accommodation complex –“Clearways”.

Pilot Selection At the Crew Training Centre - Hamilton, CTC has a Pilot Selection Centre for use on its own pilot training programmes. The facility is also available to client airlines.

Pilot Training CTC is a major player in the New Zealand pilot training market and its “CTC Wings” portfolio includes airline pilot training programmes for New Zealanders, leading to Civil Aviation Authority New Zealand licenses and ratings. CTC’s programmes are differentiated as the lead to employment, rather than only providing qualifications. CTC has also teamed up with the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) to offer Kiwi students the Diploma in Aviation Science (DAS).

As well as training a growing number of Kiwi pilots, CTC at Hamilton conducts training for overseas trainees in support of its UK sister company’s “CTC Wings” programme routes. These trainees, destined for major European airlines, spend a total of 11 months training in New Zealand before returning to the CTC’s UK facilities to complete their training.

Flying Instructor Training At the Instructor Training Centre located at CTC’s Crew Training Centre - Hamilton, the Company runs the 18-week, CTC Wings Sponsored Instructor Programme (SIP). New Zealand pilots with a Commercial Pilot’s Licence and Instrument Rating are trained to become C-category flying instructors. Successful trainee instructors are then engaged by CTC as salaried employees and enrolled on a professional development programme leading towards the top A-category instructor rating.
