Symantec Helps Consumers get their PCs Shipshape with Enhanced Backup/Recovery Toolset
Norton Save & Restore 2.0 Streamlines Backup for Consumers;
Norton Ghost 12.0 Provides Advanced Technology for Power Users
Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced Norton Save & Restore 2.0 and Norton Ghost 12.0 for Windows Vista and Windows XP users. The latest version of Norton Save & Restore has several new features designed to make it easier for consumers and digital families to get their PCs shipshape by backing up their valuable data, such as digital photos, MP3s and financial-related documents. For more advanced users, Norton Ghost 12.0 further leverages technology from Symantec’s Backup Exec System Recovery solution for businesses to create Norton’s fastest, most advanced personal backup and recovery tool to date.
Consumers of all technical skill levels have a choice of two powerful and easy-to-use solutions – Norton Save & Restore for one-step backup and Norton Ghost for comprehensive data and system protection.
“According to our research, we found that 91 percent of consumers are storing their personal data on their PCs, but we also found that 43 percent of consumers do not back up their data,” said Rowan Trollope, vice president, consumer products, Symantec. “Our latest version of Norton Save and Restore is the most consumer and digital-friendly backup solution on the market today. With more setup wizards, an improved interface and flexible backup options, users now have a tool that can give them peace of mind knowing their data is safe and secure. We also enhanced Norton Ghost for power users who demand high-performance, best-of-breed tools that provide advanced functionality and configuration options.”
Norton Save & Restore 2.0 makes it easy for users of all levels of expertise to protect their computer-stored documents, financial records, presentations, photos, music, videos and other important content. The latest version features an improved user interface and setup wizard which simplifies the process for backing up and recovering files, folders or entire computers.
For greater flexibility, Norton Save & Restore also enables users to add or restrict their backup jobs to include a select set of files or folders. For example, a home office user can set the program to backup only Word documents or graphic files. This feature is especially useful if backup storage space is limited or if the user makes frequent changes to important documents that need to be continuously protected. In addition, Norton Save and Restore provides flexibility to backup to any mapped drive or storage device.
Recovery is easy with Norton Save & Restore. Enhanced browsing within recovery points enables users to fully recover or to quickly search for and recover specific lost or damaged files or folders. An enhanced Recovery Disk enables users to restore to a recovery image, even when Windows cannot be started. If the Recovery Disk is missing drivers, a modified disk can be easily created that includes the needed drivers.
Norton Ghost 12.0 takes data and system protection to the next level with powerful new features such as remote management, Google Desktop integration and LightsOut Restore. Support for one-to-one remote management enables users to back up other Norton Ghost clients on the network. Integration with Google Desktop allows users to create searchable backup indexes to make recovering data even faster. LightsOut Restore enables users to restore their systems from a remote location via an on-disk software recovery environment, obviating the need to use a bootable CD. Norton Ghost 12.0 also includes a software recovery disk that allows users to start their computers, scan for viruses or hard disk errors and launch the recovery process even if the operating system does not start.
In addition, with Norton Ghost 12.0, users can now choose to do full system backups or to back up only specific files and folders or both. Backups include encryption and error checking to keep data safe, while compression, incremental backups and automatic backup file management minimises storage space. Users can also use Norton Ghost to convert recovery points of a physical computer to a virtual disk. Additionally, users can leverage Norton Ghost for customisable, event-triggered backups that automatically protect systems when specific events occur.
