World’s oldest man puts it down to potatoes
The world’s oldest man, who turns
116 today, puts his longevity down to a diet of potatoes and
healthy outdoor living.
Hryhory Nestor from the Ukraine is presumed to be the world’s oldest living man. His passport, based on Austrian documents, says he was born on March 15, 1891.
The Ukrainian attributes his long life to healthy outdoor living, and recommends a diet of potatoes, milk and cheese.
Horticulture New Zealand’s Potato Product Group supports Hryhory’s enthusiasm for potatoes, saying that they are part of a balanced diet, which is essential to maintain good health.
“Potatoes are an essential part of our diet, providing complex carbohydrates to fuel our brains and bodies, and giving us the energy we need for any lifestyle,” says Glenda Gourley, Horticulture New Zealand’s Food and Education Consultant.
“Potatoes are high in fibre and also provide an excellent source of vitamin C – in fact New Zealanders get about 30% of their vitamin C from potatoes” she says.
The Potato Product Group recommends eating a wide variety of foods, including potatoes, as no one food contains every nutrient the human body needs.
“The most fantastic thing about potatoes is that they’re healthy, easy to make and so versatile”says Glenda.
“Potatoes go with everything and can be prepared in so many different ways - in salads, baked, roasted with other veges or stuffed with your favourite fillings.”
