Whakatane Sharemilkers Take Top Dairy Title

Whakatane sharemilkers Peter and Jenny Sinclair have won the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards Bay of Plenty Sharemilker of the Year title at an awards event in Awakeri tonight.

The Bay of Plenty Farm Manager of the Year title went to Matthew Standish from Te Puke.

Peter and Jenny Sinclair are 50:50 sharemilkers, milking 190 cows on a property owned by Bob and Jenny Hansen. They are on target for production by year ended May 31, 2007 of 75,000 kg/ms.

The Sinclairs divide the farm business with Peter managing stock, pasture and feed, property and environment, dairy hygiene and on-farm records. Meanwhile Jenny manages finances, reporting, OSH, calf rearing and domestic responsibilities.

Both Peter and Jenny are actively involved in community and dairy industry activities.

Their longterm goal is to retire to a lifestyle block and have enough passive income to allow financial freedom.

Matthew Standish is milking 540 cows on the farm owned by Colin Armer with anticipated production of 140,000 kg/ms by May 31 2007. His long term goals include the possibility of buying a small farm to run beef grazing with lifestyle being an important consideration.

Peter and Jenny Sinclair and Matthew Standish will now go forward to represent Bay of Plenty in the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards Sharemilker of the Year and Farm Manager of the Year national final to be held in Invercargill on May 12, competing for a combined national prize pool of more than $100,000.
