Crossover and Performance Sports Cars Awards

Media Release: 9 March 2007

Embargoed until 9.20pm

AA Announces 2007 Motoring Excellence Awards for Crossover and Performance / Sports Cars and Motoring Journalist

The winners of another round of 2007 AA Motoring Excellence Awards have just been announced in Auckland:

EYEPRO Eyecare Crossover Car Class Award
Castrol New Zealand Performance / Sports Car Class Award
Deloitte Motoring Journalist Award

Stella Stocks, General Manager of AA Technical Services, says the AA Motoring Excellence Awards aim to identify and reward excellence amongst new vehicles and in areas of interest to motorists. The Awards are being announced at a prestigious black tie dinner held in Auckland tonight.

The EYEPRO Eyecare Crossover Car Class Award went to the Suzuki SX4 Ltd Manual.

Ms Stocks said entrants in this category were variations on the four-wheel-drive theme.

“The Suzuki SX4 Ltd Manual gets all the fundamentals right. With a responsive all wheel drive and balanced chassis - this vehicle stuffs all-wheel-drive into a generic family hatchback package. The judges said this ‘irresistible’ Suzuki package throws in a stacked standard equipment list and then charges several grand less for it all.”

The Castrol New Zealand Performance / Sports Car Class Award went to the Audi RS4.

Ms Stocks said this category included everything from road rockets to total pussy cats.

“The judges called the Audi RS4 ‘insane’ - it can be a family sedan one minute and a genuine rev-happy sportscar the next.”

The Deloitte Motoring Journalist Award went to Mr Paul Owen, who is currently the Chief Editor of NZ Autocar.

“This year we widened the scope of the motoring journalist award to look at three key categories: motoring books, Members of the Motoring Writers’ Guild and non-Guild members.”

“Paul has been covering automotive issues for nearly 20 years, and is well recognised in the industry with five motoring books and six Qantas Media Awards to his name. Paul was nominated by vehicle manufacturers as the journalist who best represented overall excellence in motoring journalism,” said Ms Stocks.

The AA will announce the remaining 2007 Motoring Excellence Awards, and the AA Supreme Award for Motoring Excellence, later this evening.
