Architects and Engineers Together Creating Consistency on Producer Statements

Architects and Engineers can now use a series of revised Producer Statements which aim to provide consistency when consulting on design and construction.

The Producer Statements were jointly issued by The Association of Consulting Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ), the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) and the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA).

“As each council rolls out its own kind of Producer Statements, architects and engineers may potentially have to deal with over 70 different versions”, says Dr Andrew Cleland, IPENZ Chief Executive. “We have created a form for professionals that will provide consistency and reduce error”.

The three Producer Statements outline minimum requirements for design, design review and construction review. Completed Producer Statements show that either part or all of a structure complies with the Building Code and that construction complies with the approved design.

The Building Act 2004 does not specifically name Producer Statements, but it does require that a suitably qualified person verify the design or construction complies with the Building Code.

“These forms have been modified to reflect recent amendments to the New Zealand Building Code, and to meet the requirements of professionals and their clients”, says Kieran Shaw, ACENZ Chief Executive.

NZIA Chief Executive Beverley McRae supports Mr Shaw: “Using these statements assures the owner and the Building Consent Authority that the design professional is familiar with the current codes and current practices”.
