Government confirms Eden Park as RWC finals venue Redevelopment to include new South Stand and temporary seating

Eden Park Chief Executive John Alexander today welcomed confirmation of Eden Park as the finals venue for Rugby World Cup 2011 after the Government’s announcement of its commitment to the development of the Park with a new South Stand and dismountable temporary seating to achieve the required 60,000 capacity.

Mr Alexander said that while he and his team were naturally disappointed the Government had decided not to proceed with Eden Park’s development concept, the Trust was pleased there was now definitive confirmation of Eden Park as the venue, and certainty of funding support.

“Eden Park was the venue New Zealand promised the IRB in its bid. This decision gives us the certainty to move ahead with confidence.

“The Trust Board’s first priority will be to consult with our partners, Auckland Rugby and Auckland Cricket, and our design and build team, on the full implications of this decision.

“There are a number of important issues to be worked through, including transport management and the impacts on the local community.

“After our preliminary analysis of the decision, we will be better prepared to respond in detail.

“We’re committed to working constructively with the Government, Rugby New Zealand 2011 Limited and other stakeholders to develop a Heads of Agreement to develop a finals venue for the Rugby World Cup that our community and all New Zealanders can be proud of.

“The Trust Board remains committed to the concept of completing the redevelopment of Eden Park in the years ahead, and looks forward to the opportunity of exploring the feasibility of the permanent redevelopment of the East Stand."
