Electricity Commission decision Welcome
Transpower welcomes Electricity Commission decision - 31 Jan 2007
Transpower today welcomed the Electricity Commission’s Notice of Intention to approve its proposal for a new transmission line between south Waikato and south Auckland.
The proposed new line is New Zealand’s largest transmission infrastructure project and the first upgrade to the national grid in the upper North Island for over 20 years. Since that time the population of the upper North Island has more than doubled and electricity usage has more than trebled.
Chief executive Dr Ralph Craven said the decision is a positive step forward in ensuring security of supply to the upper North Island. It is of crucial importance for the whole country and will help to deliver confidence that a secure supply of electricity will be available in the long term.
“The amended proposal provides a flexible option for the Upper North Island; it supports the development of New Zealand’s energy strategy and offers the most cost effective and efficient option to respond to growing demand.
“Put simply, the 400 kV capable option means building fewer lines and towers over time than any of the alternatives that Transpower or other parties have considered. It also facilitates better connection of renewable energy sources and encourages investment in new generation.
“We recognise that there is still a public consultation process to be undertaken by the Electricity Commission and we welcome that next step. Transpower will work with the Commission and interested parties to help complete this process in a timely fashion.
“In order to meet a timely commissioning date, it is important that Transpower continues with the work necessary to meet the project deadlines. This includes lodging Notices of Requirement with the relevant councils, working through the Resource Management Act process, preparing tender documentation and seeking easements from affected landowners.
“We will be continuing to work closely with local and regional government, affected communities and landowners throughout the process.”
