Posties Back On Delivery Routes In Hamilton
Mail deliveries have resumed in three streets in the Hamilton suburb of Fairfield.
Mail deliveries to Tennyson Road, Emerson Place and Dryden Road started again this morning following New Zealand Post's decision last week to suspend mail delivery for two days due to escalating gang violence in the area.
Postal delivery general manager Matthew Nant says the decision to suspend mail deliveries was in line with the company's comprehensive health and safety programme which focuses on injury prevention.
"We were confident mail deliveries would resume today and the two day break has allowed for a potentially volatile situation to cool off. But we really didn't want to put our Posties in a situation where some harm could come to them. We were being cautious."
Matthew Nant says he is confident things have calmed sufficiently for mail deliveries to begin again, but New Zealand Post would continue to monitor the situation.
"We will also be having on-going discussions with the Council and Police to make sure we're abreast of any developments in the area. We sincerely hope this doesn't happen again and apologise to any local residents who were inconvenienced."
