Record Number Of International Passengers

Auckland Airport Processes Record Number Of International Passengers

Auckland Airport processed a record 153,453 arriving and departing international passengers for the week ending 24 December 2006. This number does not include transit and transfer passengers.

Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL) chief executive officer, Don Huse, says the record passenger numbers were handled “smoothly and without fuss”.

“The entire airport community worked hard together to ensure seamless processing during what turned out to be the busiest week in the international airport’s history.”

The previous busiest week occurred the week ending 9 January 2005, during which 152,382 passengers passed through the international terminal. The latest record was an increase of 7.8 per cent over the same week in the previous year.

International passenger numbers for the week ending 14 January 2007 (excluding transits and transfers) showed a 3.7 per cent increase from the corresponding week last year, at 147,478.

“Further expansion is underway for an enlarged arrivals processing area and a new Pier B with additional contact gates at the international terminal. Further renovation work to the domestic terminal is also underway. We are enhancing our facilities and services in anticipation of further tourism growth and to make the visitor experience even more enjoyable.”

International terminal developments since 2003 include; a new level on the international pier, hold stow baggage screening, new emigration counters, new security screening points, 12 new check in counters, more immigration counters, expanded space for MAF operations and six new aircraft hard stands.
