FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
3 News Appoints European Correspondent
3 News has appointed reporter Rachel Smalley to be its first full-time European Correspondent, based in London.
Mark Jennings, TV3’s Director of News and Current Affairs, says the appointment will help cement 3 News’ position as the
leading news broadcaster in New Zealand.
"While other networks are looking to cut back on the number of correspondents they have overseas, we feel the time is
right to expand our reach.
"The latest research shows that our viewers appreciate watching reporters they know and trust. By having Rachel based in
London we can cover Britain and Europe, better and faster. London remains the clearing house for many of the world's big
stories, so it makes sense to have a bureau there as a priority in our expansion plans."
Smalley worked for 3 News in Auckland, before heading to Ireland and becoming the first non-Irish news anchor in the
Republic. Since 2004, she has worked as a senior producer for BSkyB News in London.
Smalley has been responsible for bulletins covering the British general elections, the Pope's death, the July 7th London
terrorist bombings, the Queens 80th birthday and Slobodan Milosevic's death.
Smalley, who was raised in Christchurch, is a Qantas award-winning journalist. She will cover stories for 3 News and
Campbell Live.
