Supreme sausage success for Westmeat Wellington
A Hunter sausage from Westmeat Wellington was today judged the Supreme Winner in the Great New Zealand Sausage Competition 2006, by a panel of celebrity judges including Kerry Tyack, Simon Holst, Fr Des Brittain, Jan Henshall, and Chef Frank Prskawetz, at the Duxton Hotel, Wellington.
Westmeat Wellington took top honours from 512 entries presented by 80 different companies. The International category creation was one of 10 gold medal-winning finalists that were all in the running for the Supreme Award.
This is the third time Westmeat Wellington has won the supreme title. “We are delighted our Hunter is being recognised as the best sausage in New Zealand and it is great that all our hard work is paying off. The Hunter is a truly delicious sausage that contains all pure meat products and is gluten-free and non-GE, which makes it the real deal,” said Manager Grahame Law.
The judges were extremely pleased with the high calibre of the Grand Finalists.
“The 10 category-winning sausages are a real credit to the manufacturers’ skill and creativity. We sampled some very exciting sausage flavours that would be equally at home in a top restaurant as they would on a barbecue. The quality of craftsmanship was outstanding,” said Chef and competition judge Frank Prskawetz.
Judge Jan Henshall also commented that “each year the standard of entrants is rising and more people are taking part, which is great to see”.
Organised by Retail Meat New Zealand, the sausage competition is in its 12th year and is highly regarded by the industry. The competition judging on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 November determined the 10 gold medal winners that went through to the final to vie for the Supreme Award.
The 10 gold medal winners are:
Beef – Leonard’s Superior Smallgoods - Auckland Pork – Spooners of Devonport - Auckland Pre-cooked/BBQ – Cashmere Cuisine - Christchurch Saveloy/Polony/Cocktail – Bucks Butchery - Cromwell Flavoured – Greytown Butchery - Greytown Flavoured BBQ – Tegel Foods - Auckland Traditional – Leonard’s Superior Smallgoods - Auckland Traditional – Prime Cut Meats Ltd - Wanaka International – Westmeat Wellington - Wellington Gourmet – meatcuisine.co.nz - Auckland
Retail Meat New Zealand General Manager, Stephen Macaulay, was also pleased with the high standard of entrants in the competition.
“The 2006 entrants are testament to the innovation and quality of sausage manufacturers in this country. We are delighted to recognise the talent and skills of these sausage makers and encourage the public to go out and sample the best New Zealand sausages available,” he said.
This year, selected entrants from several categories also competed in the Kids Choice Awards. Together with our judges, two panels of young experts put their discerning palates to work and chose their favourite sausage. The “yummiest” sausages were a BBQ sausage from Westmeat Wellington, a precooked sausage from Topmark Butchery and a Mexican sausage from Fisher’s Meats.
Devro, a world leader in the development, production and marketing of collagen casings for sausages is once again the proud principal sponsor for the Great New Zealand Sausage Competition. The competition is also supported by Kerry Ingredients, with packaging supplied by Alto.
