Software passion drives new CSI research manager

AUCKLAND, 7 November 2006: Stepping into his new role as Research Programme Manager for the Centre for Software Innovation at The University of Auckland Dr Santokh Singh is looking forward to applying wide commercial and research experience to bring industry and academic software research closer together.

A former winner of Microsoft New Zealand’s Microsoft.NET Research Scholarship, most recently Dr Singh lectured in Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University and worked with PEACE Software as a development consultant. He holds Law and Engineering degrees and, along with teaching roles, has also worked internationally in the oil and motor vehicle industries in Malaysia.

“I see huge potential in applying basic research strengths to helping clients resolve the fundamental computer science challenges that often underpin software development,” Dr Singh said.

“I have a great passion for researching, designing and developing novel, large and complex software systems. Combining this with a great need in many New Zealand businesses for extending their software capabilities we can hope to see some great achievements.”

“Santokh brings an immense number of skills and expertise in the actual understanding of software programming and development so that we can connect our researchers to the real software needs of businesses,” John Corey, the CSI’s Director said in welcoming his appointment.

Founded in 2005 by Auckland UniServices Limited, the commercialisation company of the University, the CSI researchers have already partnered with New Zealand businesses including, Orion Systems International, SoftTech NZ Limited and XSol Limited.

Dr Singh’s Microsoft New Zealand.NET Research Scholarship was awarded in 2003 to support a new development methodology, AOCE, designed to further simplify and accelerate software design and development on any platform.
