Rugby is becoming more popular according to the NZRU, which recently released figures that show a 2% increase in New Zealand player numbers compared to 2005. More children, teenagers and women are playing the sport, according to the NZRU. As the nation prepares to host the Rugby World Cup in 2011, there is a keen interest in topical sports news, from both New Zealanders and people abroad. The latest Nielsen//NetRatings’ Market Intelligence figures for the sports category shows that 435,612 visitors went to online sports channels last week of which 61% were male and 64% were visitors from within New Zealand.
The proportion of overseas visitors can vary considerably between sites; for the same week to 29/10/06, golf.co.nz’s New Zealand visitors made up 93% of their total traffic, whereas 71% of allblacks.com visitors were from overseas.
Visitors to the week’s top channel, XtraMSN Sport stayed on the sites for an average of 4 min 02 sec, against an average of 3 min 24 sec for sites in this category. Visit durations and total traffic to these sorts of sites vary rather more than most categories that Nielsen//NetRatings monitors due to the seasonality of many sports.
