Roebyna Bak becomes the first woman to be appointed as Race Manager

When it comes to the world of horse racing a woman’s face is a rarity however Roebyna Bak has broken through the field with her recent appointment as the first woman Race Manager to one of New Zealand’s largest race courses – Alexandra Park in Auckland.

Getting to the top of this highly dominated male industry has been a long hard road for Bak. However with a lifetime passion and an unwavering commitment to harness racing Bak’s was a natural choice for the role.

Harness racing is in her blood. Bak was immersed in the world of racing from a young age, so young she can’t even remember the first time she sat on a horse. Reaching her teens she spent time training horses at her family farm in Woodville, Palmerston North. Then in her twenties a short marriage and 2 great kids later, she found herself juggling life as a working single mum. Bak devoted her precious time off to her children and time at the track supporting various clubs including Manawatu, Kapiti, Stratford, Wanganui, Kaikoura and Nelson.

Moving from Christchurch to Auckland in 2005 to take on the role of Assistant Race Manager for Alexandra Park provided Bak with the opportunity to succeed into the role of Race Manager.

Bak has plans for Alexandra Park including significant renovation, refurbishment and growth. Adding to the award winning architecture of the current stables, the expansion plans over the next 12 months will see a 1,000 seat function venue and a viewing terrace added that will take Alexandra Park’s facilities to international standards.

“My goal is for all budding, owners, trainers and punters to share the passion, fun and rewards that I have enjoyed. I want to take Alexandra Park to the next level in harness racing parks. One with a truly international feel,” says Bak.

With the racing season well started and with Bak at the reins, the inside word is that it’s going to be a great season!
