Aviation Industry welcomes appointment

October 10, 2006

Aviation Industry welcomes appointment of new CAA Chairman

AIA President, Mr John Funnell welcomed the appointment of Mr Rick Bettle to the role of Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority.

“The industry is delighted that the Government has appointed such a highly experienced Director to the critical role of Chairman of the CAA and looks forward to developing a constructive and positive relationship as we look ahead to the challenges facing the aviation industry.

Mr Funnell commented that the “key challenges will be to establish a consistent and high performing regulatory framework which embodies open and frank consultation with the Industry; recognises that safety is a shared responsibility with no one party having all the wisdom and knowledge and a framework that places greatest emphasis on “top of the cliff” actions rather than after the event remedial action”

“Under the stewardship of the present Director much excellent progress has been made in reducing the accident rate through collaborative efforts of both the Regulator and Industry.” Mr Funnell, commented that this work must continue and we are certain that with his background Mr Rick Bettle will provide leadership and excellence in governance into the CAA.

The Aviation Industry Association (AIA) looked forward to an early meeting with the Chairman and the incoming Board.
