New label claim for Bayer CropScience's Calypso®
new use against thrips in nectarines and peaches
New Zealand’s nectarine and peach growers now have an extra weapon in their battle against thrips with the granting of a new label claim for Bayer CropScience’s Calypso®.
The insecticide already has a wide range of uses in apples, avocados and kiwifruit.
Bayer CropScience New Zealand marketing manager Peter Fisher says Calypso is ideal for the stonefruit industry because it can help maintain the quality of fruit for the export market.
“The problem with thrips is that they affect the developing fruit causing markings, which leads to the fruit being downgraded for export.
“Thrips can also be a passenger pest problem, especially for key markets in Australia, Japan and the USA who obviously don’t want the insect turning up with their New Zealand fruit order.”
Fisher says Calypso has the added advantage of being harmless to predator species that help control other orchard pests and, as a result, it is compatible with the industry’s Integrated Fruit Production programme.
Fisher says Bayer was originally approached by the New Zealand Summerfruit Council to do work with the stonefruit industry.
Calypso is now registered for control of armoured scales, bronze beetle, codling moth, mealy bugs, Froggatt’s apple leafhopper and Fuller’s rose weevil in apples; thrips in avocados; armoured scales in kiwifruit; and now thrips in nectarines and peaches.
