Suzuki Swift Sport Set For New Zealand Unveiling
The long-awaited high performance sports version of the Suzuki Swift is only weeks away from its New Zealand debut.
Based on the hugely successful new generation Swift hatchback, the Swift Sport 1600 is scheduled to go on sale here in the second half of September.
A powerful and distinctive looking car, it will be additional to the existing Swift hatchback line-up.
With distinctive features inside and out, there will be no mistaking the more powerful Swift Sport when it hits New Zealand roads.
Suzuki expects the new model to be a worthy successor to the previous generation Swift GTi sports hatchback that carved a fine reputation on both road and track and in rallies.
Building on the universally acclaimed good looks of the latest model, the new Sport is set to make a statement, not only in the way it looks but also because of the car's performance and handling.
An aggressive front end is characterised by a deep front radiator intake grille, an integrated front bumper and large spotlights.
The 2007 Swift Sport comes with striking, larger diameter aluminium alloy wheels, a rear tailgate spoiler, low side skirts and twin exhausts.
Firmer Monroe suspension has sharpened both ride and handling, while specialist Recaro sports seats hold front occupants securely and comfortably over long distances.
Metal pedal facings and a leather bound steering wheel provide a special touch to the interior.
Offered in five-door form for the New Zealand market – unlike the previous Swift GTi which was only available as a three-door – the Swift Sport has been carefully engineered for both efficiency and performance.
A modified longer stroke version of the proven M15A engine used in the 1.5-litre Swift boosts capacity to 1.6-litres, and the double overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder power unit is fitted with variable valve timing.
Output is up over 20 percent and top speed increases to 200 km/h, yet the Sport is still perfectly tractable for everyday use.
"The new Swift Sport inherits DNA from the legendary Suzuki superbikes and the motor sport success of the car in the Junior World Rally Championship," said Tom Peck, General Manager of Marketing for Suzuki New Zealand Ltd.
"Suzuki Motor Corporation plants are working to capacity in an effort to meet high world reaction to its products," he said. "World-wide demand for models like the Swift, new generation Grand Vitara and new Suzuki SX4 outstrip supply."
"We anticipate a similar reaction to the Swift Sport which will offer responsive, high performance motoring at a keenly competitive price," he said.
The Swift Sport is just going into world markets and pricing will be announced closer to the local launch date.
The Swift Sport will go on sale 18th September this year.
