Orion best in asset management planning – Commerce Commission report
Orion New Zealand Ltd’s asset management plan has been rated the best in the country in a recent Commerce Commission report.
“Our asset management plan details how reliably we will keep the lights on in Canterbury over the next 10 years. It is fundamental to our operations and we are pleased that the results of the Commerce Commission’s review reflect our focus on planning and maintaining our electricity distribution network to meet the needs of our community”, said Orion CEO, Roger Sutton.
The Commission’s report was prepared by Farrier Swier Consulting and ranked Orion’s asset management plan the best in terms of regulatory compliance and overall asset management planning best practice. The report particularly noted that:
- Orion’s asset management plan was worthy
of specific mention as it provided information on policies,
plans, regulations, legislation and codes that it considered
intrinsic to the asset management process
- Orion
included comprehensive sections devoted to justifying the
need for assets
- Orion appeared to be the only company
to have disclosed the existence of complete lifecycle asset
management plans.

Background
Electricity lines businesses are required to publish an asset management plan each year, which details the asset replacement, reinforcement and maintenance strategies of the lines business, usually over a 10 year period. The plan also gives customers, owners and stakeholders other information about existing and planned service levels and the future operation of the electricity distribution network.
