BNZ partners with Preventing Violence

15 August 2006

Bank of New Zealand partners with Preventing Violence in the Home

Bank of New Zealand has become principal sponsor of the charity Preventing Violence in the Home (PVH) and naming rights sponsor of a huge fundraising garage sale to be held in Auckland in November.

The event – Bank of New Zealand Get Organised Auckland – will be held on 17–19 November. It promises to be the country’s largest garage sale. All funds raised will support the work of Preventing Violence in the Home, New Zealand’s largest single agency in the domestic violence field.

The partnership announcement was made at a launch event held this evening in Auckland, attended by Prime Minister Helen Clark, Auckland City Mayor Dick Hubbard and many other leaders from across NZ society.

“From the first time we discussed this venture, it seemed thoroughly appropriate and the right thing for the Bank to support,” said Bank of New Zealand Managing Director Peter Thodey. “Changing our country’s sad record of domestic violence is a complex, difficult challenge. It will require collaboration and persistence. But the prize is absolutely worth the effort.”

Peter Thodey said the Bank is one of many organisations and individuals working together on the November event. “The generosity which has occurred to date is quite staggering. Many organisations and people are freely giving their time, skills and resources and we want to acknowledge their amazing effort.

“I know our staff in Auckland and across the country will support the Bank in this new partnership. We will encourage our staff in the Auckland region to declutter, to donate items and attend the event in November if they can. I am sure many of our staff will also take up opportunities to work in a volunteer capacity – helping to collect and sort goods, or spending some time working at the event itself. They are a caring, positive group of New Zealanders – and their enthusiasm will be a real asset.”

Bank of New Zealand has a history of building and maintaining long term partnerships across a broad range of interests. The Bank of New Zealand Katherine Mansfield Awards is in its 47th year and the Bank has been working with the Department of Conservation for 15 years in a partnership to prevent the extinction of the Kiwi in the wild.
