Farmers Welcome Wildlife Schedule Review

The Department of Conservation’s review of the Wildlife Act 1953 will be welcomed by many farmers troubled by avian pest species, said Bruce McNab Federated Farmers’ national board member.

Mr McNab’s comments follow today’s announcement by the Conservation Minister that there is to be a review of the protection laws for some species including the Canada geese.

“Federated Farmers wants affected landowners to be able to control pest species like Canada geese where and when required.

“These problem birds can decimate valuable crops and pastures, but current legislation hinders or prohibits their control,” said Mr McNab.

The Federation is pushing for a change in their status under the schedules of the Wildlife Act to allow more efficient means of control.

“Canada geese were introduced as a game bird. They have since proven too difficult to control through traditional hunting, and have become an agricultural pest.

“The detail of dealing with the problem is yet to be worked out. However farmers will be pleased that discussion is moving forward and that the long awaited review is going ahead,” said Mr McNab.
