Supermarkets still leading in grocery stakes
A Consumer survey of Auckland supermarkets shows Pak ’N Save and Countdown are cheaper than The Warehouse’s new supermarket operation.
Consumer found the existing supermarkets led the way, with The Warehouse trailing. The Consumer shopping trolley cost seven percent more at The Warehouse’s new Sylvia Park store than at the closest Pak ‘N Save.
“We followed the same methods we use in our annual supermarket survey, and we visited the supermarkets closest to Sylvia Park,” Consumer survey supervisor Bev Frederikson says.
The Consumer survey shows customers are benefiting from the Warehouse’s entry into the east Auckland supermarket scene. In April Consumer surveyed supermarkets in Birkenhead and Albany. They were more expensive then than the supermarkets we surveyed this month near Sylvia Park. Consumer expects The Warehouse to bring intense local competition wherever it opens a supermarket.
