Fiji Sets Hot Pace

New Zealanders are continuing to holiday in Fiji in record numbers.

For the year to date (to May) numbers are up 3.2 percent to 33,332 over the same period last year which was an all-time record.

May figures showed a jump of 10 percent to 8904 Kiwi visitors compared to the previous year.

For the 12 months to May, 110,026 Kiwis went to Fiji, up 7.6 percent over the comparable period to May, 2005.

In the period 2003 to 2005, visitors number from New Zealand shot up almost 46 percent from 75,000 to 109,000.

Fiji Visitors Bureau's director in New Zealand, Paresh Pant, said five years of year-by-year record growth had continued because of the huge investment in tourism.

Over a billion dollars had been poured into creating new resorts as well as upgrades of existing tourism plant.

This had provided significantly more rooms meeting a pent-up demand, particularly during the peak months.

More new resorts were due to open over the next two years.

Meanwhile, the bureau will launch a new national $300,000 "Fiji On Sale" marketing campaign this weekend on television and in newspapers.
