Post-storm property check

Post-storm property check

07 July 2006

After a period of heavy rain and high winds, residents are advised to take a quick look over their dwellings to check for damage or fittings that may have worked loose.

The BRANZ Helpdesk advises that after a storm, damage is likely to occur to guttering, down-pipes and drains, as these items come under extreme pressure from the weather. A simple check should also be made to the exterior cladding of buildings, particularly around windows. Another area requiring inspection is the roof and roof spaces to determine if any materials have become loose or dislodged. According to the Helpdesk, even small amounts of damage can lead to much greater problems if left unattended.

In situations where there has been flood damage to homes, people are advised to go to the BRANZ website (www.BRANZ.co.nz) and download a free copy of BRANZ Bulletin 455 “Restoring Houses after Flood Damage”.

Members of the public are also advised that they can call the BRANZ Helpline on 0900 5 90 90. Calls to the Helpline cost $1.99 per minute plus gst.
