Symantec to Support Linux on POWER with High
Availability and Backup Solutions
Joint Symantec and IBM Solutions Reduce Cost and Complexity in the Data Centre
Symantec (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced an agreement with IBM that provides for the delivery of Symantec high availability, storage management and backup products for the Linux on POWERTM platform by the end of 2006. These solutions will help clients consolidate Linux applications on the IBM System pTM platform, leveraging the benefits of IBM’s leading System p hardware platform and Symantec’s leading data centre infrastructure software.
The announcement is another example of Symantec’s commitment to support all major UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms in the data centre, enabling customers to standardise on a consistent software infrastructure across heterogeneous environments. The deal extends the strong engineering relationship between the two companies that began in April 2000.
“Enterprise customers are looking for solutions that help them to reduce the cost and complexity of their data centre environments,” said Richard Villars, vice president of Storage Systems at IDC. “For those companies that are looking to Linux-based solutions like the Linux on POWER portfolio from IBM as part of these efforts, the ability to use standard storage management solutions like those from Symantec provides the assurance that addition of Linux will simplify the environment, not make it more complex.”
Symantec’s Data Center Foundation products are available across all major UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms. Veritas Cluster Server helps reduce application downtime and protect a variety of server and application environments, ranging from a single database instance to globally dispersed clusters. Veritas Storage Foundation provides data centre-wide visibility into the storage environment, with power to control and manage that environment. Veritas Volume Replicator provides a robust storage-independent disaster recovery solution by replicating data over any IP network, to maximise data protection and application availability. Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle® RAC greatly enhances the management and reliability of Oracle RAC environments.
“Symantec is committed to offering the broadest platform support in the industry for our Data Center Foundation solutions,” said Rob Soderbery, senior vice president, data center management group at Symantec. “This new agreement builds on Symantec’s strong engineering relationship with IBM, extending it to the System p servers. Through support of all leading hardware platforms, the Symantec Data Center Foundation reduces cost and complexity for customers by enabling data centre wide standardisation on a single infrastructure software platform.”
