Cheddar Meets Dark Ale In Perfect Match!

13 June 2006

Cheddar Meets Dark Ale In Mainland Cheese Perfect Match!

Cheddar cheese is as much a kiwi icon as a pint of beer and now the team at Mainland have combined the two by crafting a new twist on an old favourite: Mainland Cheddar Master's Dark Ale.

For the first time in New Zealand, Mainland has crafted a match made in heaven to bring cheese lovers the taste of mature aged cheddar soaked in traditionally brewed dark ale.

Described by respected US cheese critic John Greeley as a "satisfaction of hops and barley with a full cheddar flavour and an elegant marbled appearance", Mainland Cheddar Master's Dark Ale is testament to the Mainland mantra that good things take time.

"This is a beautifully aged, full-bodied cheddar with a clean 'dark ale' aroma," explained Greeley, on his recent New Zealand visit to judge the Cuisine Champions of Cheese Awards 2006.

Kerry Tyack, Editor, Food & Beverage magazine and cheese judge at the recent Cheese Awards, says the art of beer and cheese matching pays respect to the craftsmanship involved in the cheese making process.

"Beer and cheese are much better partners than wine and cheese because beer has the malty sweetness of caramel that complements the milky taste and texture of cheese", says Kerry.

"This effort by Mainland acknowledges the mutual tradition of matching beer and cheese and shows how well the two can partner each other in texture, aroma, and taste."

Mainland's passion for producing quality hand crafted cheeses saw it win more medals across its portfolio than any other brand at the prestigious Cuisine Champions of Cheese Awards.

Mainland's range of great tasting cheddars was amongst those to receive accolades at the Awards.

The launch of the Mainland Cheddar Master's Dark Ale will be supported by a national television campaign on air from June.

The ad features the two lovable old 'codgers' from Mainland, Kevin and Terry, and shows their delight in the discovery of heaven-sent Dark Ale cheddar.

Mainland Cheddar Master's Dark Ale is available from all leading supermarkets nationwide, in two sizes (125g and 250g).
