Architects welcome construction licensing move
The New Zealand Institute of Architects has welcomed an announcement by the Hon Clayton Cosgrove, Minister responsible for Building Issues, of a new regime for the licensing of building practitioners.
The changes, announced on Saturday night at the Registered Master Builders Annual Conference in Queenstown, will come into force in 2009.
“This announcement is good news for the entire industry and will offer increased protection and peace-of-mind for both people having homes built and commercial property developers,” said NZIA President Gordon Moller.
“We are pleased with this development, which is in line with our presentations and submissions to the Minister and the Department of Building and Housing.
“These new regulations are being implemented to ensure those working within the industry are accountable for their work – and we believe that will inevitably lead to higher standards across the entire construction industry.”
Mr Moller said the NZIA looked forward to collaborating with the Minister and industry stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of the new regulations.
THE NZIA represents New Zealand’s 1,400 registered architects.
