Philanthropic sector thrilled with Morgan donation

Gareth Morgan’s announcement that he will donate $47m to charitable organisations will make a significant difference to funding options for a wide range of New Zealand charitable groups.

“It’s great that someone is prepared to make such a significant public commitment to supporting charities through philanthropy,” says Andrea Goble, General Manager of the Funding Information Service, which provides funding information to the community and voluntary sector.

“Mr Morgan’s decision to place the money in a foundation like structure means that a wide range of groups will be able to benefit from long-term, sustained and strategic funding which is great news for the community and voluntary sector.”

The donation also made a positive statement about philanthropy and giving in New Zealand, and highlights the huge contribution that many private
philanthropists make to supporting charitable groups and other community organisations.

“This is really a celebration of the culture of giving in New Zealand and we would encourage anyone else thinking of donating to charity to follow this example. By thinking about how to structure the donation and researching the best ways to distribute funds Mr Morgan will be able to better sustain the organisations he cares about over a longer period of time,” says Robyn Scott, Executive Director of Philanthropy New Zealand, the umbrella organisation for the philanthropic sector.

Ms Goble says it is important for philanthropists to be informed about best practice and to understand that all donations, regardless of size, should be carefully planned to enable maximum benefit for recipients.

“We always encourage and celebrate the act of giving – whether it is through time or money. Yesterday’s announcement highlights the fact that philanthropy is alive and well in New Zealand and we look forward to seeing the positive effects of Mr Morgan’s contribution on New Zealand communities,” says Ms Scott.
