Intrepid’s India Operations Manager Sue Barreau recalls her first camel fair. “I’d been to Pushkar before but never seen it like that! The normally tranquil Rajasthani village had been transformed into the most colourful, chaotic and fascinating place possible. Thousands of camels, cows and stock animals were being traded in deals which involved loud bargaining by numerous magnificently moustachioed men. The women folk were of course along for the social event of the year - a chance to dress up in their most colourful traditional dress and put on the magnificent golden jewellery that forms the family’s wealth. They traded gossip and played matchmaker beside their temporary tented homes. As night fell, out came the entertainers just itching to collect your rupees through acts of magic, snake charming and fantastic traditional singing and dance. Rajasthan is a brilliant spectacle at any time but attending the Pushkar Camel Fair is definitely an extra special experience.”
So whether or not you have a camel to sell, Pushkar Camel Fair is well worth the journey and Intrepid knows just the right price! But hurry – with only 12 spaces available, this trip will fill up fast.
