Brumby’s bakes up record with “Bun Thursday” with $100,000 worth of hot cross buns available to charities

New Zealanders are expected to set an all time record for one of the nation’s Easter traditions – hot cross buns – and New Zealand charities will be the winner.

Leading bakery franchise Brumby’s says it expects to bake more than 1million hot cross buns over the Easter period to meet demand.

But it will also make available more than $100,000 worth of unsold buns to charities.

Brumby’s New Zealand head Rachel Casley says the hot cross bun is a traditional favourite and Brumby’s stores have increased staff shifts to cater for the huge Easter demand with the peak being on “Bun Thursday” ahead of Good Friday.

“It will be all hands on deck on ‘Bun Thursday’ – even office staff will be in store, and many bakers will start work Wednesday evening and work right through Thursday to ensure no-one misses out on their steaming hot cross buns for Easter,’’ Rachel said.

“But we also want to make sure charities don’t miss out so we will be making a available to them $100,000 worth of hot cross buns over the Easter period.’’

Rachel said charities in need of food support should contact their local Brumby’s Bakery and lodge their interest in sharing this Easter charity bonanza.

While hot cross buns are linked to Christianity – a 12th century monk marked small, sweet buns with a cross in honour of Good Friday – buns with a cross on them have been connected to a number of ancient civilizations including the Incas, Aztecs and Egyptians.
