Cheryl Kortink Wins Inaugural Maggie Maxwell Fairfax Leadership Award

Fairfax New Zealand Ltd today announced that Cheryl Kortink, Advertising Director of the Dominion Post, has won its inaugural Maggie Maxwell leadership award.

The award has been created to foster leadership qualities and honour the memory of the late Maggie Maxwell, who headed the company’s magazines division under INL ownership and who died recently after a long illness.

Fairfax Chief Executive Officer Joan Withers said Cheryl Kortink epitomised outstanding leadership, inspiring her team to the highest standards and contributing selflessly to the efforts of those around her and to the wider Fairfax group.

``Cheryl is the ideal inaugural recipient of this award, which seeks to acknowledge key qualities of openness, honesty, integrity and trust, plus the ability to think broadly and strategically, and lead by example.

``These were also some of the qualities of Maggie, who was an inspiration as a person and leader,’’ Joan Withers said.

Fairfax Central Region General Manager Paul Elenio, one of the people who nominated Cheryl Kortink for the award, said she set high standards in terms of professionalism, accountability, presentation and dedication to the job.

``She is passionate about newspapers, understands her market and is often ahead of others in recognising the possibilities in the future. She is loyal to her staff, but expects them to meet her standards and expectations. She is very good at recognising and rewarding achievement.’’

Paul Elenio said: ``Like Maggie Maxwell, Cheryl is a creative thinker who gets the best out of people.’’

Joan Withers said Fairfax was delighted with the excellent standard of the people nominated, which demonstrated the leadership talent available to Fairfax right across New Zealand.

The company is committed to leadership development, and has for the last three years run a leadership and management programme with the University of Auckland as part of an extensive training schedule for its 2800 employees.
